Admission procedures for September 2010

Parents seeking a place for their child in Year 7 in September 2010 must include Wellington School amongst the preferences named on their Local Authority’s Common Application Form

Students may be admitted at the age of 11, without reference to ability, aptitude or religious denomination.  The number of intended admissions for the year commencing 1 September 2010 will be 244.

The Co-ordinated arrangements introduced by the 2002 Education Act impose a national “allocation day” of 1st March.  All parents will be notified by their Local Authority on behalf of the Governing Body, of the outcome of their application by letter posted on (or on the first working day after) that date.

Only applicants born between 1 September 1998 and 31 August 1999 (inclusive) will be considered for entrance into Year 7.

Where the number of applicants for admission exceeds the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied, in the order set out below, to determine how the places are awarded:

1.     ‘Looked after’ children (as defined in s.22 of the Children Act 1989).

2.     Applicants living in Post Code areas  WA14 and WA15.

3.     All other applicants.

If the number of applicants in any of the above categories exceeds the number of places available, then the places will be allocated on the basis of proximity of the child’s home address to the school, with those living nearer being accorded higher priority.  Distance will be taken as a straight line from the applicant’s front door to the main school entrance.

A map showing the WA15 and WA14 Post Code areas is available for inspection at the School Office.

The child’s home address means the address where the child normally and permanently lives on a full-time basis, not a temporary address or the address of another carer or relative.  In the case of parents who are separated or divorced and where child-care arrangements are shared between two addresses, the distance to both addresses will be measured and the average of the two figures will be used for the purpose of determining priority for admission.

Wellington School reserves the right to withdraw a place at a later date if it is discovered that false or incorrect information has been provided in order to secure a place.

Unsuccessful applicants may request to be placed on a waiting list and thus be considered for any places that may arise in the future.  These places will be awarded in accordance with the criteria listed above.  Parents who wish to exercise this right must state their intention in writing directly to the school within 28 days of receipt of the notification letter.

All unsuccessful applicants will have the right to appeal to an Independent Appeals Panel in accordance with the Education Acts.  Parents who wish to exercise this right must state their intention in writing within 28 days of receipt of their notification letter.
